A requiem to the streets: An act of kindness for the ghetto’s that raised me.

The anti-blackening is happening. In the recent weeks with the “YN” quarter zip & matcha trend and the loud utterance of “Fuck the Streets!” The streets and the inhabitants should be vastly put on notice. May these words be my own requiem to the streets. An act of remembrance of the United States Ghetto that raised me to be.

I could never be one to champion the phrase “Fuck the Streets”, because inherently I would then be saying fuck me and countless others who came before me who had no choice but to grow out of those streets. I could never say “Fuck the Streets” because the lessons from the streets grew so many great leaders.  Essentially the streets have been the genesis for the styles and trends all over the world. Hip Hop came from the streets as a means to solve gang violence and enforce community awareness amongst the youth. Social movements such as the Black Panther Party, although lead by Huey P Newton who was a UCLA student, was a movement birthed in the streets of Oakland. The Black Panther Party was also responsible for the creation of countless social justice programs such as early childhood education programs and community breakfast programs that have been adopted and still used by the Federal and local Governments today. When you come to think of it. The streets, trends, thoughts and ideas from the inhabitants of the inner cities have been cultural fuel for not only America, but cultural fuel for the entire world.

I’ve spent my life as a participant, observer and student to these streets. It would take a knowing from the inside out to truly understand that the problem isn’t the problem of the streets nor in the streets. The problems arise from the outside influences that have in the last 30 + years, molded the mentality of the people in the streets. I often look to the people in my community who have been deeply afflicted and affected by poverty, drugs, poor education, red lining and countless other societal issues as a beaten down and bastardized brand of a people who used to be regal. A people so far removed from their original selves that now they even struggle to embody a slight essence of who they previously were. A brainwashed people. And this has been made this way by design.

In 1968 James Brown released “Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud” as a single on his “A Soulful Christmas” album which soon became an anthem for the Black Power movement and rang throughout the streets. At that time, although not completely universal, the vibe of the streets was Black Empowerment, love and community. A message which was necessary to instill a sense of pride in a people who had been for decades left without a battle cry.

The streets were our original social media outlets with Barbershops being the prehistoric message board of the day where information was either held or disseminated into the community. There may have not been screens, vlogs and blogs but still the street corner preacher held court and their followers listened. The problem was never the streets. The problem and or lack thereof is who has the power to influence the minds of the inhabitants of the streets.

Today, unfortunately, the people have lost control of the vibe and mentality of the streets. The streets have been hijacked by corporations with high aspirations to control the minds of Black youth and lead them to their destruction. The broadcasted culture through music and media is much like a weaponized psyop being used against the people who dance to the tune of their own death. Media corporations, record labels and greedy record executives create, champion and force more regulated, lyrical death dealers into the ears and minds of the people. And we keep eating that shit up. We’ve come a long way from where we were and seemingly, we have a long road of recovery yet to travel if we ever want to get this thing together. As a people.

Again, I can never say “Fuck the Streets” when most people of the streets are so lowly and disenfranchised that they can’t even see how they are being ‘Fucked by the Srteets”. Survival mode is a beast and a motherfucker. Let us “Empower the Streets” by helping to “Educate the Streets”. Our survival depends on us.

Each one teach one.

Challenges make champions

One has to respect the working artist and entrepreneur for having the faith as well as the heart to believe, achieve and succeed. As most already know, being an artist is not for the faint of heart. One has to be able to endure the lows of the doldrums for many moons ever before even seeing the peak of the mountaintop in the distance. Sincere artistry takes a focused tunnel vision. The world outside is full of noise and distractions that seemingly get placed in the path along the way to test one’s metal. Which way will you turn? Will you follow the crowd? Will you shrink to fear and doubt due to the mutterings of others? Will you turn inward towards the outside world of artists surrounding you and become bitter at their achievements? Will you fall for the outward applause and attention of the “suspected” onlooking crowd and forget to be your authentic self? I surely hope not!

These days you hear a lot of talk about “getting back to self” in both the regular world as well as the metaphysical world. Particularly I feel that a portion of my artistic journey for this life and long haul has been about that indeed. Life and the things we grow and go through lead us, if that be the case, to forget self. We all are products of our immediate environments and the situations and people surrounding us can influence our ideas and beliefs to the point we tend to end up far from our original ideas of self. Most people we encounter are just going through this experience like non player characters in video games. No knowledge of self, no real direction, just a blank thought blowing about and swaying in the wind like a crumbled piece of loose-leaf paper. While the burden may be heavier and the binding much thicker. I find it best to be solid, knowledge filled, heavy and put. Ten toes down so they say. It’s the challenges that make a man/woman and lead us back to capturing our authentic essence of self.

I’m releasing the pre-sale link for my upcoming album “Omnipotent Methodology” Tuesday December 23rd at 12 noon. December 23rd is my late son’s birthday and as a celebration of his life I felt it proper to offer to the people a Holiday advance sale of the physical album. This is a project that I am very proud to bring to life and birth to reality. Aligning the date of the advance physical release of this album with the date of my son’s birth just seemed like everything right to me. Let’s revisit those challenges that make a man and lead us back to authentic self. If you know my story, then you know my son passed away 7 years ago on June 18th, 2018. It’s not like I love to revisit the tale or the memories of that day. It’s just that It’s important for me to add because that sunny day in June was the day that I was challenged with a tragedy that rocked my foundation and shook me to my core so hard that I had no choice but to release the version of self which I had known to exist and seek to find my authentic self. Not a reimagined self. Not my new self. Just me, myself and I. The road was rough and arduous, but it seems that we have made it.

I might crack a smile when ain’t a damn thing funny. I might shed a tear amongst the laughter and cheers. I might wear a silk shirt in the Amazon if I damn well please. So long as I am in my authentic energy and doing me. You do you and let me do me. I know it’s non-conventional to release an album up for physical release before digital releases these days and that’s cool if you feel indifferent. What I’m offering is an opportunity for those who believe and know is a chance to buy in and grab their copy of the physical album at the lowest price that it will ever be offered. It’s not that I know they will all eventually sell out but it’s the fact that they will all eventually sell out, and the price is elastic upon inventory!

It’s a love offering.

Audio: Backwood Sweetie featuring BLAX – Always (produced by Jimmy Green)

“Burn One” ep but Backwood Sweetie

Peace!

This year has started off to be an amazingly great artistic year!

Around February I had a deep seated urge to get back to the grind of slangin these rhymes like dimes in DOOM like fashion and so that’s what I did!

Thanks to the great and free networking services like twitter, facebook and instagram I was able to immediately boot up and hop right back into the thick of the underground hip hop scene.

My creative thought process has always been to cater to those who support me and not to focus so much on mass appeal. I like to look at the art that we create in the underground as if it is boutique.

With that said I will always be thankful for my #1 twitter home girl Samantha aka @Black.silq529 for being a friend and believer because if it weren’t for her reposting my tweets I would have never been properly introduced to Backwood Sweetie, whom is definitely now a friend and sister of mine’s. Among other things she is a mother first as well as a phenomenal writer and artist. From our shared conversations I also gather that she is heavy on the Black Nerd movement and loves anime and video gaming too, which is super cool. Thats the balance that a talent like Backwood Sweetie possesses.

I was honored to be asked to feature on the track “Always” for Backwood Sweetie’s latest ep “Burn One”. The track features the soulful production of UK hip hop producer Jimmy Green and immediately caught my ear. After receiving the song from my homegirl from Hyattsville, MD I got right to work on crafting my verse asapishly! My pen was moving feverishly because I was so inspired and motivated by both the beat and the flows. More so than that I was beyond geeked just to be considered as a feature artist and humbled as well because this woman slings rhymes like Conan swings swords and I was impressed that she called me in to help fight and feature on her battle for rap supremacy.

Off the rip Backwood Sweetie came correct with her verse so I had no choice but to blaze mines. Seemingly, even without ever meeting we align well with each other content wise and flow wise and over a jazzy, classic, hip hop track we delivered what some are calling “Song of the year”! Shouts out to Ruben!

“Burn One” is a dope ride that features a handful of other notable talents on the beats as well as the bars. The ep is getting noticed and if you havent already please go check the track as well as the overall ep.

Much love and respect to hip hop. Women in hip hop and overall DOPE emcees.

Peace!

Critical mass

Overpass crash through the digital dash

I paid attention

try not to mention

Sat thru detention in the class

They all mad I left flags

Hanging at half mast

Rest In Peace to veterans

The letterman

Micheal Meyers beheading them

These bars the medicine

Medicinal like penicillin

They caught feelings with Ill intentions

All in my mentions

Know your thoughts

Before you finish

The sentence

You can scream

The justice may vary

Whether it’s good or bad

My iller path

Still the aftermath

Hit the lick and we do the dash

Tour Blog #2

On Tour
The Pittsburgh was awesome. Spirit Lodge did their thing in holding it down for us as artists with the hospitality. The fans in Pittsburgh were really receptive to the music and came ready to have a good time. I know i did.
The openers for the night Driving While Black put on a nice set showcasing their skills. What really impressed me were there beats. They had some bangers going fasho!
This was my first time performing in Pittsburgh but it went across well. Luckily I’m performing to a built in crowd of people who have been accustomed to what I do and how I deliver it as a musician as far as being R.A.P Ferreira fans who have watched him grow to his now artistic iteration from his then Milo moniker. The fans are used to watching g a man rap and process through his beats and samples by use of the SP404sx linear wave sampler.
The people who come to these shows are the people who want a quality listening experience so being that my sound and style provides that all else has been a cake walk. I love to be able to have e the experience to express myself in this manner.
Also, thankfully since we’ve gotten the tour underway and I am not making lodging decisions on my own I haven’t had another bad hotel experience either! I still have a lot to learn about if it’s worth more to pay for a great place to rest or more to attempt to rest at a cheap hotel. Marinate on that!!
Our next show on the second day of tour was the Cincinnati stop, which actually was switched to Covington, KY (which is just across the bridge from Cincinnati). We played that spot with a kid named Jay Hill Raps who along with his DJ out on a dope and unique set. The venue was a rooftop venue which was dope. The show went well for myself and the fans bought merchandise. One special moment about this stop was that there was a kid who had seen me perform with R.A.P Ferreira a few years back in Chicago and came to the show as a returning supporter. It’s always cool to make those connections with individuals so that they always feel
obliged and comfortable to come back and see you.
Our next stop after the Cincinnati date was Louisville, KY. I was excited about the Louisville stop because I had always heard great things about the grass in the blue grass state and I’m not gonna lie I did enjoy the grass. Now the bourbon on the other hand was not fit for man nor beast that has any intentions on performing. I feel I still did well at my job of performing but having two bourbon drinks before hitting the stage just was not the wave. First off that bourbon is strong as an ox, nasty as hell and again strong as an ox. I was onstage having a moment of “what am I doing, why and what for” for a second! Hilariously I pulled it all together and was still very well able to deliver a high powered and felt show. Again the crowd showed love and they bought merchandise which always makes me happy. One thing I won’t ever do again is that bourbon before rapping. Never ever.
