Audio: Backwood Sweetie featuring BLAX – Always (produced by Jimmy Green)

“Burn One” ep but Backwood Sweetie

Peace!

This year has started off to be an amazingly great artistic year!

Around February I had a deep seated urge to get back to the grind of slangin these rhymes like dimes in DOOM like fashion and so that’s what I did!

Thanks to the great and free networking services like twitter, facebook and instagram I was able to immediately boot up and hop right back into the thick of the underground hip hop scene.

My creative thought process has always been to cater to those who support me and not to focus so much on mass appeal. I like to look at the art that we create in the underground as if it is boutique.

With that said I will always be thankful for my #1 twitter home girl Samantha aka @Black.silq529 for being a friend and believer because if it weren’t for her reposting my tweets I would have never been properly introduced to Backwood Sweetie, whom is definitely now a friend and sister of mine’s. Among other things she is a mother first as well as a phenomenal writer and artist. From our shared conversations I also gather that she is heavy on the Black Nerd movement and loves anime and video gaming too, which is super cool. Thats the balance that a talent like Backwood Sweetie possesses.

I was honored to be asked to feature on the track “Always” for Backwood Sweetie’s latest ep “Burn One”. The track features the soulful production of UK hip hop producer Jimmy Green and immediately caught my ear. After receiving the song from my homegirl from Hyattsville, MD I got right to work on crafting my verse asapishly! My pen was moving feverishly because I was so inspired and motivated by both the beat and the flows. More so than that I was beyond geeked just to be considered as a feature artist and humbled as well because this woman slings rhymes like Conan swings swords and I was impressed that she called me in to help fight and feature on her battle for rap supremacy.

Off the rip Backwood Sweetie came correct with her verse so I had no choice but to blaze mines. Seemingly, even without ever meeting we align well with each other content wise and flow wise and over a jazzy, classic, hip hop track we delivered what some are calling “Song of the year”! Shouts out to Ruben!

“Burn One” is a dope ride that features a handful of other notable talents on the beats as well as the bars. The ep is getting noticed and if you havent already please go check the track as well as the overall ep.

Much love and respect to hip hop. Women in hip hop and overall DOPE emcees.

Peace!

Critical mass

Overpass crash through the digital dash

I paid attention

try not to mention

Sat thru detention in the class

They all mad I left flags

Hanging at half mast

Rest In Peace to veterans

The letterman

Micheal Meyers beheading them

These bars the medicine

Medicinal like penicillin

They caught feelings with Ill intentions

All in my mentions

Know your thoughts

Before you finish

The sentence

You can scream

for repentance seven Hail Mary’s

The justice may vary

Whether it’s good or bad

My iller path

Still the aftermath

Hit the lick and we do the dash

For the deed we get the cash

Tour Blog #2

On Tour
The Pittsburgh was awesome. Spirit Lodge did their thing in holding it down for us as artists with the hospitality. The fans in Pittsburgh were really receptive to the music and came ready to have a good time. I know i did.
The openers for the night Driving While Black put on a nice set showcasing their skills. What really impressed me were there beats. They had some bangers going fasho!
This was my first time performing in Pittsburgh but it went across well. Luckily I’m performing to a built in crowd of people who have been accustomed to what I do and how I deliver it as a musician as far as being R.A.P Ferreira fans who have watched him grow to his now artistic iteration from his then Milo moniker. The fans are used to watching g a man rap and process through his beats and samples by use of the SP404sx linear wave sampler.
The people who come to these shows are the people who want a quality listening experience so being that my sound and style provides that all else has been a cake walk. I love to be able to have e the experience to express myself in this manner.
Also, thankfully since we’ve gotten the tour underway and I am not making lodging decisions on my own I haven’t had another bad hotel experience either! I still have a lot to learn about if it’s worth more to pay for a great place to rest or more to attempt to rest at a cheap hotel. Marinate on that!!
Our next show on the second day of tour was the Cincinnati stop, which actually was switched to Covington, KY (which is just across the bridge from Cincinnati). We played that spot with a kid named Jay Hill Raps who along with his DJ out on a dope and unique set. The venue was a rooftop venue which was dope. The show went well for myself and the fans bought merchandise. One special moment about this stop was that there was a kid who had seen me perform with R.A.P Ferreira a few years back in Chicago and came to the show as a returning supporter. It’s always cool to make those connections with individuals so that they always feel
obliged and comfortable to come back and see you.
Our next stop after the Cincinnati date was Louisville, KY. I was excited about the Louisville stop because I had always heard great things about the grass in the blue grass state and I’m not gonna lie I did enjoy the grass. Now the bourbon on the other hand was not fit for man nor beast that has any intentions on performing. I feel I still did well at my job of performing but having two bourbon drinks before hitting the stage just was not the wave. First off that bourbon is strong as an ox, nasty as hell and again strong as an ox. I was onstage having a moment of “what am I doing, why and what for” for a second! Hilariously I pulled it all together and was still very well able to deliver a high powered and felt show. Again the crowd showed love and they bought merchandise which always makes me happy. One thing I won’t ever do again is that bourbon before rapping. Never ever.

Tour day 1

On Tour

Peace world and thanks for tuning in. Me and my brother R.A.P Ferreira are out on the road on tour getting things moving. Our first stop was Spirit Lodge in Pittsburgh. First shout out to Justin Strong for hosting us and promoting the event. As well shout out to the fans in Pittsburgh they showed mad love. For a medium sized show they really turned up and out on. Pittsburgh has some amazingly supportive fans and I’m definitely looking forward to one day coming back.

As for myself my trip started off well. After a 56 minute flight from Chicago I landed at Pittsburgh international airport with very little difficulty, grabbed my bags from baggage claim and scheduled a Lyft to pick me up. The layout of the land of Pittsburgh is very different from that of the midwest with lots of greenery and hills. I have never been to Pittsburgh so I had no clue as to what to expect. Upon the Lyft ride to the Motel 6 hotel room I had secured I was informed by my Lyft driver that there may be a prostitution ring being run out of the Motel which was hilarious but you know I’m all for a good time! Lol. Nah not really! I was kind of shocked but hey times are hard and people gotta get it how they live I guess and that’s a literal statement. Not that I expected much out of the Motel 6  it it seemed even expecting little was to expect too much at all because my room was crazy dirty. There were dirty boot marks in the shower and the room floors were sticky. I can’t really call it much, it was unsavory but yet it did provide a nights rest.

Moral of the story is to avoid the bargain priced motel rooms and spend a couple dollars. That is if you can. Next stop is Covington, KY. Check ya’ll on the next one.

Peace,

BLAX

BLAX processes grief and seeks truth on ‘Angeline’

March 1, 2015 by ITWebDev
In The News

“Gotta be yourself / Can’t be nobody else.”

That’s BLAX—a.k.a. Adebisi Agoro—in “Acknowledgement,” the opening track of his new latest LP, Angeline. It’s a fitting sentiment for the longtime Milwaukee emcee. Since co-founding and eventually leaving Fresh Cut Collective more than a decade ago, Agoro has moved to New York City, moved back to Milwaukee, and released numerous records under his BLAX and Armstrong Ransome monikers. But no matter the moniker, Agoro’s music belongs to him, and nobody else.

Take the ebullient “A Roller Skating Jam Called Liberation.” It borrows its title and vibe from De La Soul, but its truth-seeking, praise-filled mission statement is BLAX’s own. Elsewhere, the jittery “Technical” manages to get in shout-outs to The Wiz, Ludacris, and Julius Caesar and Brutus in its short runtime. “Shine” samples the hazy Curtis Mayfield song “The Makings Of You,” and the lovely “Does She Know” showers even more praise on an unnamed woman.

A certain woman is named on the record, however: BLAX’s grandmother Angeline, who passed away in 2013. Closing track “A Vibe Called Blessed” reveals that “the name Angeline means a messenger from God.” BLAX goes on to explain that his Angeline album is “an album that was manufactured out of grief, love, pain, and a sense of victory. A cathartic artistic process of the growth and evolution of man in a philosophical sense. A livid testimony from the one and only true and living Asiatic Black man from the original continent of Asia, more commonly referred to as Africa.

“I am him,” concludes BLAX, “he is I , he is GOD, we are ONE.”

BLAX’s ‘Roller Skating Jam Called Liberation’

February 28, 2015 by ITWebDev
In The News

Do you want to talk about folks who are in the rap game for the purity and the craftsmanship of the rap game? Well, Milwaukee is blessed to have BLAX (given name Adebisi Agoro), who is without question embedded in that conversation. When talking about his new record, Angeline (available now on all digital platforms), BLAX says, “Everything on the record is intentional.” That much is made manifest with even a cursory listen to the album.

There is a loose freedom in “A Roller Skating Jam Called Liberation” that takes the listener out of space and time and completely into a world of BLAX’s creation. The song is built on a sunny chord progression where the silky maestro pairs spirituality with a straight up disco bounce. The song will be featured as part of Light the Hoan and Radio Milwaukee’s series pairing local music with the shimmering lights of the Hoan Bridge on Feb. 26 at 9pm.

Angeline is coming out on Social Misfits/Next Records, a New York City based label. It seems fitting because though the record is obviously well-constructed, there still remains a New York type of griminess happening below a lot of the songs’ surfaces. “The Streetz” is a prime example, in which BLAX’s flow levitates and ponders dingy forgotten street corners over a whip-tight sample. BLAX says the narrative of the song centers around a real-life event that he was witness to.

Creative Fire

When asked about what stokes his creative fire, BLA. begins succinctly, “I’m an artist.” There is a deft transfiguration of pain that seems to run through the new record that somehow seems to prove his point. “I have been at constant creation since I can remember. As a child, I was always creating or drawing and imagining things. For me, art and creation isn’t a thing I do because people are watching or wanting. It’s just what I do,” BLAX continues.

For BLAX, no matter how far he and his art travel, it seems that Milwaukee is a constant in the nuclear center of his expression. “As a kid, I grew up all over the North Side of Milwaukee. Predominantly, the Northwest side on 38th and Custer. My music is a culmination of all of my life experiences from youth to adult,” he says.

On Angeline BLAX is a self-contained vibe machine, in that he produced all of the beats on the record where he also holds court as a prize-fighting emcee. “Producing the entire record definitely changed my approach to working on music. Being solely responsible for the music, this time around, was definitely important,” BLAX says. There are occasions across the record, like “Midnight Love” which features Shelly Conley and Jay Hubb, where the beat and the vocal approach can barely be separated, in a way that feels lived in and true.

Radiant Transcendence

It’s easily evident to hear that BLAX encountered a type of transcendent liberation while making this record. He shines, and he shines in his own way. His radiant spotlight even touches on the tragic loss of his son, with a vulnerability firmly rooted in strength that is uncommon. Frankly, it is worth giving Angeline a try just to witness an open soul who is committed to creation give so much of himself.

When asked to ponder success, BLAX’s lens is set wide, yet he digs into the thought with surgical precision which is completely on brand for him. “Success is being happy with self. Knowing that my actions today will continue to set and lay ground towards an even better tomorrow. There are a billion artists who never even get to find the means to express themselves. To have been one of the ones chosen to do so is success in itself before any accolades can ever be applied,” BLAX says.

Angeline takes its name from BLAX’s beloved grandmother who passed away in 2013. With the name itself being rooted in the word Angel, you can feel the divinity dripping from its grooves. The record drops a lotus flower growing from the mud type mentality, which is the type of perseverance music that is desperately needed in the current times.
